Spontaneous protests on Saturday, outrage grows

The outrage and skepticism of the Australian community continues to mount. A MySpace user has called for protests around the country this Saturday. Although EFA is not involved as a sponsor (this time) we hope this succeeds in sending a wake-up call to the Goverment.

Here's a sample of the sorts of commentary running in the press at the moment:

Internet censorship is draconian

Internet filter to cause World Wide Wait for Aussies

Net filter an assault on freedom that just won't work

(Thanks, Courier Mail).

Internet screening move hits hurdle

Two good pieces in today's Crikey - here and here (subscription required, sadly).

Finally, EFA's Dale Clapperton has prepared an interesting analysis of the legalities of implementing the filter - does the Government require legislation?

Vote on that poll, plus more news on the filter there.

I think the government has made the mistake of drastically underestimating the negative reaction that such a filter would illicit. People do want the right to control internet access using free nanny programs but they do not want the government to do it for them which amounts to censorship plain and simple. Regardless of the claims that they don't want to recreate the great firewall of China they will be opening a very dangerous door and I believe the backlash for even attempting to do such a thing will be immense. They need to rethink this as I am appalled that they are talking as though this decision is already final!

This is what I've written to Mr Conroy:

"Dear Mr. Conroy

In regards to your pathetic unjustified decision to filter internet browsing in Australia
I strongly object.
I'm the one who will decide what is appropriate for me and my family not a jerk like you.

What next? Government telling me when to eat, when to sleep? Looks like so.

Where is the democracy? where is the freedom this country was so famous for? Long gone...

I migrated here 20 years ago looking for freedom but this country is fast transforming itself
from democracy into dictatorship- another Zimbabwe in the making.

Whole Europe and many other countries are laughing at this overruled over regulated Australia

Many people are going back to their countries for this only reason as living is unbearable
in this "Police Country" as many call it around the world.

I'm glad I'm leaving for good in 12 months or so but many Aussies will be hurt badly
by your senseless bureaucratic decision.

So get back to your senses Mr Conroy, don't be a disgrace to this country!"

I just found this site. The official site of the December 13 Australian internet censorship protests. They also have forums where the planning is discussed.

If we all pitch in we can stop the censorship of our internet!
